A thickness gauge is a device for measuring thickness at leather, paper, felt, rubber, sheet metal, foil, plywood, cardboard, foam and more. Thickness measuring devices are available as portable hand-held thickness gauges, textile laboratory usage or tabletop units. A foot changes the thickness gauge, designed for hand-held use into a thickness measuring device for on-table operation. Measuring with self-closing thickness gauges occurs with a defined pressure, while self-opening thickness measuring devices are operating by pressing the plunger. The essential criterion for choosing the right thickness gauge is the shape of the feeler, which differs according to the measured material. Further criteria for selecting thickness measuring devices are accuracy, measuring range and depth of jaw. Special versions of thickness gauges are proper due to the design for measuring thickness of running material or tube walls, respectively because of the high resolution for measuring thin material like foils. Moreover there are thickness measuring devices for measuring thickness according to DIN, EN and ISO standards or transferring data to a PC for evaluation.
